The Fantasticks is a 1960 musical with music by Harvey Schmidt and book and lyrics by Tom Jones. It tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the 1894 play The Romancers by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud.
A 2022 production at Flint Rep reinvents the classic musical. With a fresh new rewrite by book writer and lyricist Tom Jones, in collaboration with director Michael Lluberes, the young lovers at the center of the story are re-imagined as two young men, with two neighboring mothers. The Fantasticks is a funny and beautiful allegory about falling in love and growing up. We couldn’t be more excited to share this new interpretation of the longest-running musical in history.
